Paperwhite Narcissus

I used the HDR effect filter on Picassa for this image. I like the way the petals look with this effect.

I love Paperwhite Narcissus. Their bulbs are forced in greenhouses for the florist industry in winter, usually around the holidays. They have the most intoxicating scent at a time of year when I’m stuck indoors, smelling things like wet stinky dog and last night’s garlic crusted fish. Like many people, Tom is not partial to the scent. It is a very strong scent, which can be overpowering when the windows are all closed up for the winter. But I love having these white ‘daffodils’ in a sunny spot, reminding me that spring will come eventually and my daffodils and tulips will bloom once again. These Paperwhites arrived the Saturday before Christmas, with my friend Terri. She brought them to lend cheer and beauty to our home for the holidays. She also brought the wonderful antique butter mold I told you about last week. What a great friend!

Buds ready to unfurl.

I’ve enjoyed watching the little buds unfurl into stately white blossoms, like tiny white tea cups or little girls’ Easter dresses as they twirl themselves dizzy.

It’s snowy outside, but the flowers remind me of spring.

There are a few things in winter that I enjoy immensely, fluffy snowflakes and Christmas Trees, clear pink sunrises and icy patterns on the windows, and Paperwhites in the windowsill.

Thank you Terri :)

Did you receive a pot of Paperwhites from a friend over the holidays?
