Cuteness Alert - New Chicks Arrived!
The Postmaster called me around 8:30am to let me know my chicks had arrived. I brought the box home and started taking each chick out, sticking each little beak in the water until they got the hang of drinking on their own, and then set them down under the heat lamp. One little one didn’t survive the trip and within 4 hours another one joined him in Little Chicken Heaven. You get kinda used to losing little ones after you’ve done this for awhile…but not really.

I ordered 25 Black Broilers and 25 Surprise Package Pullets from Ideal Hatchery. They shipped 52 chicks, so at this point we’re even. Hopefully there aren’t any more losses. I did notice that one of the survivors has pasty butt, so I tried to clean that up and will watch to see if that continues to be a problem. The surprise pullets have really got my imagination running wild as to which breeds are included. I can see that there are some Turkens or Showgirls in the mix, since there are some naked necks (at least 6 of them). Some of them look like they might be Black Australorps and some look like Americanas…but it may be weeks before I can identify all of the breeds. One thing I know for sure, there will be lots of picture taking going on around here!
Here are some warm and fuzzies for you to ooo and aaah over
