Peeps On Order!

I really don’t have enough to keep me busy, so I ordered some chicks on special. I have 25 Black Broilers and 25 Surprise Package Pullets coming next week from Ideal Hatchery. The broilers are to put in the freezer and the pullets are to replace my laying hens when they go into a molt. I expect them to start molting this fall or winter. Hopefully the new chicks will start laying in time to take over. The old laying hens will be made into soup or will go in the pressure canner.

I’ll post lots of chick pics when I have them! I’m looking forward to having babies again…they’re so much fun to watch :)

Other news on the homefront:
- Our temps have cooled down into the high 80′s for a few days, woohoo! We had a little bit of rain overnight, good news for the farmers…hopefully the crops can be salvaged. I’ve been stocking up on chicken feed before the prices go up.

-The turkeys are growing fast and are getting used to being in their pen next to the garden, instead of in the garden. They ruined the broccoli, rutabaga, and beet seedlings that I planted…as I should have expected. I have 2 young turkeys that I plan to butcher early because they have physical problems that will probably cause difficulties as they get larger. I’m hoping to try ‘beer can turkey’ with those ones :) They should be ready in a couple of weeks.

-I’m hoping to get some fall veggies planted this weekend if the soil dries out enough. I think there is still time for beets, maybe carrots, some peas, lettuce, and spinach. I need to get the soil ready for planting in the little greenhouse too. I will plant broccoli, spinach, lettuce and maybe Swiss chard in there.

-Tom showed me how to make a collage using PowerPoint. Here’s my first attempt!

Have you found software that you like for creating collages like this? This was fairly simple to do, but I would like more choices for border styles and backgrounds.

Hope everyone is getting rain and cooler temps if you need it!
