Random Thoughts from the Homestead

5 Random Things Friday - From the Homestead

  • I have 18 laying hens, 1 rooster, 8 six month old pullets, 22 Cornish X meat birds, 19 mixed breed chicks, and 6 ducks as I write this. Don’t tell my hubby I said this…but I have too many. :)
  • Our garden is toast now. We’ve had hard frosts every night for the last week or so. I have carrots, beets, potatoes, and parsnips to dig still. I’m not in much of a digging mood right now.
  • I keep saying that I don’t care about flower gardens, but I keep taking photos of flowers when I’m out walking. Above is a Hollyhock that grew wild in the field across the road from us this summer. I love the deep plum color.
  • My gardens are all in a sad state of overgrown weediness right now. They got away from me in August when we went to New York to visit family. But I had fun visiting my Dad’s garden while the weeds were taking over in mine. :)
  • I’m thinking that I need to learn to eat more weeds. They seem to do best in my garden.
