Root Cellars
This week I’ve got root cellars on the brain. This is thanks to Debra over at Homespun! She shared the following post, Grandpa’s Storm Cellar…
Now, I’ve had root cellars on my mind for a long time. In our next house we hope to design a root cellar/ storm cellar right into the house when we build. But in the mean time, I have been using the coolest section of our basement to store roots for the winter. I had potatoes, garlic, and onions that were good up until late winter and early spring this year. That’s pretty darn good for a space that wasn’t really designed for keeping vegetables.
Here are some more ideas for root cellaring your potatoes, carrots, squash, etc. this coming winter.
This first video shows how to set up a small root storage barrel, in case you have small amounts to store, or you just don’t have the space, time, or funds to build a full scale root cellar.
Check out this old root cellar that is still in good working order…
Check out this Homesteading Series video…
Do you have a root cellar? Or are you totally jealous of the old homestead root cellar in the video? (like me) ![]()
