How to Make Lip Balm with All Natural Ingredients

Make Lip Balm at Home with All Natural Ingredients!

Did you know that it is ridiculously easy to make your own lip balm? This recipe takes just 2 or 3 ingredients and about 10 minutes to make! If you don’t have essential oils, you can just leave them out and your lip balm will still work just fine. No coconut oil? Substitute olive oil, sweet almond oil, or avocado oil instead. I like the combination of coconut oil, beeswax, and peppermint oil for my custom-made lip balm. However, you can mix it up and use what you have or order the ingredients you want.

Customize Your Lip Balm Recipe

This is a very simple recipe that can be customized to your needs. It comes out quite hard so it could easily be poured into a tube container if you prefer those to the small tins or plastic flip-top containers. I used the flip-top container because it can be washed and reused. This saves money and reduces waste. Win-win!

If you would like your lip balm to come out a bit softer, reduce the amount of beeswax to 1 1/2 tablespoons. The resulting product will be much easier to spread on your lips.

This winter I want to try a few more essential oil combinations for my homemade ‘chapstick.’ A combination of grapefruit, lime, and lemon would be really nice! You can mix it up and use the essential oils you like.

The best essential oils for this purpose are either food-grade or generally recognized as safe for internal use. Although lip balm isn’t for internal use or human consumption, make sure that anyone using it is aware of this…especially young children.

    1. Hi Piper,
You could use paraffin wax in place of beeswax, but just be aware that it is a petroleum product. I buy beeswax from a co-op to make my own salves and lip balm, so I have it on hand. I hope this helps… Lisa

  1. In the ingredient list, it says 2-3 drops EO and in the instructions it says add 4-5 drops EO. Wondering which one I should follow?

    1. Hi Fawn,
Sorry about that. Either measurement will be fine. 4 to 5 drops will have a stronger scent.

  2. With the amount of lip balm that I go through, especially during the winter months, I feel like it would be best to make it myself. This looks pretty simple to make, so I will have to get my hands on the ingredients and give it a try.

  3. Love this! It’s so simple. I’m going to try this with my girls – we are always looking for easy, natural, homemade cosmetics. Maybe we’ll try some other oils too – we’re experimenting with making rose oil from our foraged rose petals. Found you on the Farm Fresh Blog Hop!

    1. Hi Sarita!
I hope you and your daughters enjoy the homemade lip balm! I love it and I really enjoy trying new essential oils. 🙂
      Thanks so much for visiting!

    1. Thank you, Joanne! Yes, the amount of beeswax to oil is important or you end up with lip balm that is too hard or not hard enough!
