The trick to making hot cocoa that isn’t lumpy – make a paste with the cocoa powder, sugar, and a small amount of milk…then stir in the remainder of milk slowly.

Here’s the Simple Recipe…

It’s so simple to make that you may not even need a recipe! But just in case you want some guidance, here’s the recipe I use to make hot cocoa.

Hot Cocoa Recipe

Makes 1 cup Hot Cocoa. Multiply by the number of servings you wish to make.

  • 1 heaping Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar (or to taste)
  • pinch of salt (optional)
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy), divided
  • 1 drop vanilla extract (optional)
  • Garnish (optional)

In a small saucepan (do not place on the stove yet!), combine cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and 2 to 3 Tablespoons of the milk.

Stir together to form a paste. Add milk in small amounts and stir to mix thoroughly after each addition. Adding milk all at once will make lumpy hot cocoa.

When all of the milk is stirred in, add a drop of vanilla extract. Stir.

Place the saucepan on a burner and turn heat to medium-low. Heat to the desired temperature and add garnish.

Multiply recipe by the number of people you wish to serve. Add marshmallows, a sprinkle of cinnamon, whipped cream, a cookie, candy cane or other garnish as desired.
