Make Your Own Hot Cocoa!
This homemade hot cocoa recipe is a delicious treat in cold weather! Sure, you can buy a hot cocoa mix, but have you looked at the ingredients list?
Sometimes there are additives that you don’t want and the cocoa powder is probably not fair trade. (Wondering why you should buy fair trade chocolate? Read this!)
It’s also inexpensive to make your own and reduces the amount of waste you create. There’s a lot less packaging with homemade hot cocoa! So this is a delicious way to reduce your carbon footprint!
This hot cocoa tastes wonderful with an Italian Chocolate Christmas Cookie!

Here’s the Simple Recipe…
It’s so simple to make that you may not even need a recipe! But just in case you want some guidance, here’s the recipe I use to make hot cocoa.
Hot Cocoa Recipe
Makes 1 cup of Hot Cocoa. Multiply by the number of servings you wish to make.
- 1 heaping Tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 Tablespoon sugar (or to taste)
- pinch of salt (optional)
- 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy), divided
- 1 drop vanilla extract (optional)
- Garnish (optional)
In a small saucepan (do not place on the stove yet!), combine cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and 2 to 3 Tablespoons of the milk.
Stir together to form a paste. Add milk in small amounts and stir to mix thoroughly after each addition. Adding milk all at once will make lumpy hot cocoa.
When all of the milk is stirred in, add a drop of vanilla extract. Stir.
Place the saucepan on a burner and turn the heat to medium-low. Heat to the desired temperature and add garnish.
Multiply the recipe by the number of people you wish to serve. Add marshmallows, a sprinkle of cinnamon, whipped cream, a cookie, candy cane, or other garnish as desired.
