Why Make Wheat Free Dog Biscuits?
Whether you have pet dogs, therapy dogs, or foster dogs, these wheat free dog biscuits will allow them to have treats without getting an upset tummy! Some pets have trouble digesting wheat and it can cause gastric distress when they eat it.
My dog Rocky has a sensitive stomach and I had to stop giving him the store bought biscuits. I was able to find dog food that doesn’t contain wheat, yay! But he still wants goodies and I like to give him a little snack once a day. So I went in search of recipes for biscuits and other treats that he could have.
Wheat Free Biscuits to the Rescue!
There are a ton of different recipes for dog biscuits available, but most of them called for wheat flour, corn, peanut butter, and other foods that trigger his tummy issues. These ingredients are fine for many pets, but not for my Rocky.
After much research, I decided to try brown rice flour, oat bran, and cooked winter squash for the main ingredients in a new dog biscuit recipe.
I also read an article about the benefits of coconut oil for dogs and I wanted to add this healthy ingredient to my homemade dog treats, too.
This recipe has worked out great for both of our dogs. They like the crunchy, crispy biscuits and I like the fact that they don’t cause Rocky to get sick! These treats are crunchy enough to help clean tartar off their teeth…an extra bonus.
Wheat Free Dog Biscuits
- 3 1/2 cups brown rice flour
- 1/2 cup oat bran or quick oats
- 1 cup cooked, mashed winter squash or pumpkin
- 2 eggs
- 3 Tablespoons melted coconut oil
- 1 – 3 Tablespoons water, as needed
- brown rice flour for rolling out dough
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
In medium bowl, combine brown rice flour and oat bran or quick oats.
In separate bowl, combine cooked, mashed winter squash or pumpkin, eggs, and melted coconut oil. Blend until smooth.
Slowly stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Add a tablespoon of water and knead dough. Add more water if necessary, until dough sticks together and is a smooth consistency.
Sprinkle counter with a liberal amount of brown rice flour. Turn dough out onto flour. Pat dough down and sprinkle with more flour. Use a rolling pin to roll dough out to about 1/4″ thick. Add more flour to keep dough from sticking to rolling pin, if necessary.
Cut dough with cookie cutter, or cut into strips. Transfer biscuits to ungreased cookie sheet. Place cookie sheets into oven and bake for 30 – 40 minutes until biscuits are crispy and dry. Cool thoroughly and store in an airtight container.
They Make a Nice Gift Too…
Your dogs will enjoy these tasty treats. The winter squash adds some vitamins and the coconut oil helps give them a shiny coat. They will want to eat the whole batch in one gulp!
But if you have friends and family with canine companions, you might want to save a few of these tasty biscuits for them! Place a handful of treats in a decorative bag and tie with ribbon for holiday gifts for the pups on your ‘Nice’ list! You could also give this recipe and a dog bone cookie cutter set for the DIY enthusiast on your list. 🙂
