Why Make Wheat Free Dog Biscuits?

Whether you have pet dogs, therapy dogs, or foster dogs, these wheat-free dog biscuits will allow them to have treats without getting an upset tummy! Some pets have trouble digesting wheat and it can cause gastric distress when they eat it.

My dog Rocky has a sensitive stomach and I had to stop giving him the store-bought biscuits. I was able to find a dog food that doesn’t contain wheat, yay! But he still wants goodies and I like to give him a little snack once a day. So I went in search of recipes for biscuits and other treats that he could have.

Rocky was a very cute little pup! Can you tell he is just a little bit spoiled?

Wheat Free Biscuits to the Rescue!

There are a ton of different recipes for dog biscuits available, but most of them called for wheat flour, corn, peanut butter, and other foods that trigger his tummy issues. These ingredients are fine for many pets, but not for this guy.

You don’t have to use a bone shaped cookie cutter…your dog won’t care! But it is nice for making dog treats as gifts. 🙂

After some research, I decided to try brown rice flour, oat bran, and cooked winter squash for the main ingredients in a new dog biscuit recipe.

I also read an article about the benefits of coconut oil for dogs and I wanted to add this healthy ingredient to my homemade dog treats, too.

This recipe has worked out great for both of our dogs. They like the crunchy, crispy biscuits and I like the fact that they don’t cause Rocky to get sick! These treats are crunchy enough to help clean tartar off their teeth…an extra bonus.

  • 3 1/2 cups brown rice flour
  • 1/2 cup oat bran or quick oats
  • 1 cup cooked, mashed winter squash or pumpkin
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 Tablespoons melted coconut oil
  • 1 – 3 Tablespoons water, as needed
  • brown rice flour for rolling out the dough

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a medium bowl, combine brown rice flour and oat bran or quick oats.

In a separate bowl, combine cooked, mashed winter squash or pumpkin, eggs, and melted coconut oil. Blend until smooth.

Slowly stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Add a tablespoon of water and knead the dough. Add more water if necessary, until dough sticks together and is a smooth consistency.

Sprinkle counter with a liberal amount of brown rice flour. Turn dough out onto the flour. Pat dough down and sprinkle with more flour. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough out to about 1/4″ thick. Add more flour to keep dough from sticking to the rolling pin, if necessary.

Cut dough with a cookie-cutter, or cut into strips. Transfer biscuits to ungreased cookie sheet. Place cookie sheets into the oven and bake for 30 – 40 minutes until biscuits are crispy and dry. Cool thoroughly and store in an airtight container.

  1. Hi Lisa! I just made these for Nikki and he loves them! I used millet flour as that is what I had at home, tumeric infused coconut oil, and added chopped fresh cramberries too. I had a mini gingerbread boy cookie cutter and they turned out very cute! Nikki is staring at me whining for more as I write this!

    1. That’s awesome, Jeanine! I’m so glad Nikki is enjoying them. 🙂 It’s also great to hear the additions and tweaks you’ve made so others can try those too!

      Thanks for sharing!
