Stencil Revolution Review & Tips For Using Stencils

Are you looking for a quick and easy way to decorate your home, create gifts, or make a sign? Stencils allow you to apply a design multiple times with just a bit of clean up in between. You can decorate cards, tiles, walls, fabric, wrapping paper, a Farm Fresh Eggs For Sale sign, or pretty much anything you want!

I’m a crafty sorta person and I like making cards and gifts for my family and friends. It’s nice to give something! So, when Emily from Stencil Revolution offered to send me some stencils, I was quite happy to say yes. 🙂

They have plenty of great stencils to choose from and I had trouble picking just a few. So I chose designs that I thought my readers might like.

What I Liked About These Stencils

Stencil Revolution creates their stencils using a CO2 laser cutter and 10 mil Mylar. I’ve used other stencils in the past and I found the Stencil Revolution products to be thicker and easier to clean and use. Having a thicker sheet of Mylar really makes a big difference. Thinner sheets bend out of shape pretty quickly, making it more difficult to get a clean design. I can tell that the stencils I received for my Stencil Revolution Review will hold up well with the right care.

Each stencil from Stencil Revolution comes in a variety of sizes, from 5×6″ for decorating cards and small items, to 55×35″ for making a bold statement on a wall or large piece of artwork.

Stencil Revolution is located in Spring Hill, Florida and all of their stencils are made in the United States.

What Did I Do With These Stencils?

I used the Stencil Revolution Review products to create greeting cards and some rustic decor. Here are some photos of my creations…

Greeting Cards

I had packages of ready made, plain cards in white, ivory, and craft paper. I used the stencils to make everyday greeting cards and Christmas cards. If you plan to use stencils to create greeting cards, be aware that some designs do not fit as well on a standard 5×6″ card…so choose your design with the project in mind.

I’m happy with the way these came out and I’ll be making more to share with you later.

Patriotic Decor

I found a 2×8″ piece of lumber in our barn, leftover from a homesteading project. It was the perfect size for several of my new stencils. Tom cut the board into squares and I sanded them to remove rough edges. I was going for a rustic look, so I didn’t sand to perfection.

Then I used an acrylic paint wash of white or blue on each piece. Once they dried, I sanded them a bit to create a distressed look.

I used the stencils from Stencil Revolution to apply designs to the wood. These rustic signs are thick enough to stand upright on their own. You can see the patriotic signs I created in the photo above. Others were decorated with winter and Christmas themes. I’m looking forward to trying some new designs and will share a dedicated post soon.

How To Use Stencils

Stencils are pretty easy to use, but there are a few tricks to make your design come out looking clean and crisp.

Tape stencil in place, or use spray adhesive on back of stencil and adhere temporarily to project. This will keep the stencil from moving as you work.
Use a dry brush to apply paint to design and dab or tap the paint onto the project to prevent excess paint from seeping under cut edges of the stencil.
As you dab paint onto project, move brush from stencil into painted area slightly.
If you use spray paint, be sure to use very sparing applications of paint. Place project on a horizontal surface and point spray directly down onto surface to avoid spraying under edges of stencil.

Wrap It Up – I’ll Take It

I had fun creating projects with the stencils from Stencil Revolution! I will admit that I had to practice my stenciling skills a bit on scrap paper. It’s been awhile since I’ve taken time out to create any decorative crafts.

Now that I’ve got the hang of it again, I am looking forward to creating my own homemade greeting cards and gifts for friends and family!

Hmmmm, I might need more stencils. 🙂
