Mango Habanero Chili

I love chili. It’s one of my favorite meals, especially in cold weather! So I was looking forward to trying the Mango Habanero Chili from Valley Food Storage. I read the directions, opened the package, and made 3 servings so that each member of my family could taste test a bowl of chili for lunch. The following takeaway is based on all three of our opinions.

Preparation

I was expecting a meal that is prepared by adding boiling water to the dry chili mix, waiting a few minutes, then eating. After reading the instructions I realized there is a bit more to it than that. The chili mix is added to boiling water, allowed to cook on the stovetop for 15 – 20 minutes, removed from heat, then left to thicken for another 5 minutes before eating.

It’s not a big deal to cook the chili mix and I didn’t find it inconvenient…I’m used to making meals from scratch! But I think it is worth noting that this mix is not an ‘instant meal…just add hot water.’

Flavor & Texture

The Mango Habanero Chili is actually a bit spicy! If you love spicy food, you’ll enjoy this chili. If you prefer mild foods, then this chili might have more flavor than you’re used to. My family likes a bit of heat in our food and found the chili to be of a medium spiciness…enjoyable, without overdoing it.

I used a little too much water in my pan of chili and it didn’t come out as thick. But the texture and flavor were good regardless of my mistake.

The flavor of this dish is a blend of sweet, savory, and spicy all in one.

I wasn’t expecting the touch of sweetness in the chili and found it to be very good.

My husband felt the chili was a bit sweet, but still thought it was very tasty.

Our son liked it as is and stated that it was ‘really good!’

We all enjoyed the chili with tortilla chips, sour cream and fresh cilantro.

If we were in a survival situation, this chili would be a welcome and filling meal that I’d be happy to have in my bowl! It would also be a great meal to have for wilderness hiking and camping trips. We go camping quite often and it is a hassle to keep buying ice for our cooler. So I’ve been searching for tasty food that doesn’t go bad…and this chili fits the bill.

I like the fact that it is shelf stable, so you can stock up on this for emergency food storage or take it on a trip when you won’t have refrigeration.

Serving Suggestions

We ate our chili with tortilla chips and sour cream. Here are some other ideas for tasty ways to serve it up?

  • Nacho plate – tortilla chips with melted cheese, chili, jalapenos, and olives
  • Baked Potato – topped with sour cream and chili
  • Tacos – fill soft or hard shell tacos with browned ground beef mixed with chili, cheese, tomato and lettuce
  • Bread bowl – fill with chili and top with chopped onion and grated cheese
