Spring Gardening & Grungy Fingernails

No, I’m not talking about a new band out of Seattle. It’s officially that time of year when my fingernails look like I’ve been digging through garbage. And they will undoubtedly look like this until late fall…maybe even winter. Anyone who gardens and hates wearing gloves while they dig in the dirt knows exactly what I mean. No matter how hard you scrub, the dirt just ain’t goin’ away until the garden is put to bed for the season.

But there is an up side…I’ll have lots of great veggies to show for my hard work and dirty hands! So far I’ve planted peas, potatoes, spinach, kale, lettuce, raddichio, carrots, beets, rutabagas, turnips, onions, and radishes. I still have a ton of work to do, however. So my nails will be nice and brown!

Ok, fellow gardeners…how many of you have dirt under your nails right now? Don’t worry, I’m not telling! 😉

  1. Love the idea of the soap! I don’t usually have bar soap around… I use (WHEN I remember to) vinyl gloves under my gardening gloves. It does pretty well to keep the dirt off the hands and if I have dirt under the nails, it loosens it enough it just falls out. I wash and reuse the vinyl gloves often.

  2. Just received a scolding from my 85 year old southern belle grandmother yesterday about the soil stains under my nails. She told me to scrape my nails on a bar of soap prior to any gardening or dirty work in animal pens. It keeps dirt out and washed clean at the end of the chore. These little hints of wisdom will be greatly missed when her generation is no longer with us.
