The Chicken Chronicles Part 7 - New Buff Orpington Hens

One of my new Buff Orpington hens

This past Friday I went to a little farm in a neighboring community to look at some laying hens. The gentleman selling them had a small mixed flock of chickens, ducks and 1 turkey. I went in search of a few more hens, since I am having trouble keeping enough eggs for our friends and family. So I came home with 7 Buff Orpington’s that looked healthy and happy.

Normally I would recommend putting your new chickens in quarantine for a couple of weeks before mixing them in with your flock. But it seemed more likely that my flock will infect the new hens with something, than the other way around. So in they went and boy, was Elvis excited to have some new girls to dance and strut around for!

The new hens were not kept in a coop with a light on a timer, so they were not laying much when I picked them up. They also will not lay for a little while after the stress of being moved to a new home. But I expect that in a couple of weeks I should be getting 4 or 5 more eggs a day from my flock with this new addition. That should be enough to keep everyone happy :)

Elvis surveys his flock, including 2 of the new hens.
