Freeze Dried Strawberries
These are really good. They taste almost like candy eaten right out of package. I also tried them mixed with yogurt, sprinkled on cereal, and added to pancakes…they were delicious!
The texture is very light and airy with a concentrated strawberry flavor that is naturally sweet. Mixed with yogurt and in cereal, the strawberries rehydrate and taste more like fresh berries.
We do a lot of camping in the summer, and I like having long term storage foods on hand for emergencies. So I’m excited to try Valley Food Storage products to fill these needs and, after tasting them, I know that my family enjoys them. No one wants to stock up on emergency and camping foods that they don’t like!
In addition to emergency storage and camping, these berries are great for everyday uses such as adding them to:
- instant oatmeal
- muffins
- quick breads
- granola/cereal
- trail mix
- yogurt
- smoothies
- pancakes/waffles
I must admit these strawberries are making me consider purchasing a home food freeze dryer.
Valley Food Storage also sells food freeze dryers (#ad), food storage buckets, oxygen absorbers, and other products in addition to their line of shelf-stable foods. These products allow you to create your own long term storage foods if you are interested in a more DIY approach.
Here is the recipe for pancakes…
Strawberry Pancakes
- 2 cups unbleached flour
- 4 tsp baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 3 Tbsp sugar
- 2 cups milk
- 2 eggs
- 4 Tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 cups freeze dried strawberries
Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into a medium bowl. In a separate bowl beat the eggs, add in the milk and vegetable oil and combine. Add flour mixture and stir just until most of the lumps are mixed in, scrape bottom of bowl. Add freeze dried strawberries and stir just until combined.
Spoon batter onto hot, greased griddle. When bubbles form in batter on top of pancake, flip and fry other side. Makes around 12 – 15 pancakes.
Enjoy!
