Why Do I Have So Many Roosters? &The HomeAcre Hop #110
Too Many Roosters?
The sound of a rooster crowing just feels right on our little homestead. And it’s fun to watch them fuss over their hens too. But I really don’t need 13 of them! So I decided to butcher my Rhode Island Red roo this week. He had respiratory issues for quite awhile this winter and I already have one batch of chicks from him. So into the stew pot he went. I also have two young cockerels (from my last rooster, an Easter Egger) that hatched in late October and early November. I’m waiting to see how disease resistant they are before I decide if I will keep them. And I’ll be darned if I don’t have at least 10 cockerels in the latest batch of chicks I hatched out. Their little combs are a giveaway and they’re already starting to play-fight at 3 weeks old. A friend of mine who teaches biology informed me that the hens determine the sex of their offspring. Silly hens! Why on earth would you want more roosters around? Sigh…so it looks like I’ll be butchering most of those little guys in the spring. Heaven knows we don’t need any more roosters around here!
