The HomeAcre Hop #69

Merggie and Oz are doing great!

Welcome to The HomeAcre Hop

It’s been a busy week on my homestead. Merggie and Oz, the odd couple, are growing, pooping, and eating like crazy. I’m changing their brooder lining at least twice a day but they are still smelling up the guest room! Soon they will need to go out to my brooder room in the chicken coop. I feel sad sending them off to the coop where they will be such tiny little birds in a big room, but I have more chicks due to hatch this weekend and I’ll need the brooder box for them. Merggie’s little tail and wing feathers are growing like mad and Oz is trying to eat them, which makes for some pretty frazzled little feathers. They get along great and little Merggie, who had me worried for the first week, is now hopping up on top of the EcoGlow brooder as though it’s just a tiny step. I’m amazed at how quickly he/she has grown and overcome the early weakness that I was afraid would be the end of little Merggie.

My garden is about half planted and the other half will need to wait until the frost danger is over. I have a flat of tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant in the basement under lights, awaiting warmer weather. I need to plant my melons, cukes, and squash in a day or so to get them off to an early start under the grow lights. My broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage are hardening off in my little greenhouse. I have peas, potatoes, onions, carrots, parsnips, beets, salsify, lettuce, kale, spinach, and herbs planted. I’m so looking forward to my own veggies!
